Municipalities in Satipo and Nauta in Peru’s Amazon have passed ordinances granting native stingless bees legal rights to exist, thrive in a healthy environment, and be defended in court, making them the first insects in the world recognized with such legal status. Legal protections allow humans to file lawsuits on their behalf if their existence or habitat is threatened.
