Minneapolis tests civilian crash responders to see if it can ease police workload

Minneapolis is preparing to test new alternative responses to certain 911 calls after accepting a $2.5 million federal Byrne Discretionary Grant. The city was invited to apply for the grant in 2023, and officials said the funding will support two pilot programs designed to ease the workload on Minneapolis police and improve response to higher‑priority emergencies.
